Professional product photography is one of the most important investments a company can make in its marketing, advertising, e-commerce, and branding efforts. Whether a product is being sold online, featured in a marketing campaign, displayed in a catalog, or introduced to the marketplace, the quality of the photography directly influences how customers perceive its value.

At Bassett Studios Commercial Photography, product photography generally falls into two categories. The first is clean, isolated product photography photographed on a white or neutral background for e-commerce platforms such as Amazon, Shopify, catalogs, websites, and product databases. The second is lifestyle and advertising product photography, where the product is photographed in an environment or with supporting props that help tell a story and communicate the benefits of ownership and use.

Product Photography Begins With The Message

There is no single approach that works for every product.

Every assignment begins with understanding the product, the target audience, and the marketing objective. Before discussing lighting, backgrounds, or camera angles, I want to understand the message the client wishes to communicate. Is the goal to emphasize luxury, precision, durability, innovation, craftsmanship, performance, or ease of use?

I often refer to this process as building consensus. Through conversations with clients, marketing teams, brand managers, creative directors, and stakeholders, we establish a clear direction before production begins. When everyone agrees on the message, the photography becomes more focused and effective.

Perspective Matters

Subtle decisions in lens selection, camera position, and perspective have a significant impact on how consumers perceive a product.

A low camera angle combined with a longer lens can make a product appear more powerful, important, and heroic. Elevated viewpoints can communicate refinement, elegance, or technical sophistication. Close-up photography can highlight craftsmanship, materials, and precision details. Wide environmental views can demonstrate scale, functionality, and real-world use.

While many of these choices may not be consciously recognized by consumers, they influence perception and help reinforce the intended marketing message.

Lighting Defines The Product

Lighting is one of the most important elements of successful product photography.

Different products require different lighting approaches. Reflective metals, glass surfaces, consumer products, industrial equipment, electronics, medical devices, food products, and luxury goods all present unique challenges.

My preference is to create highly controlled lighting environments that allow complete flexibility in shaping highlights, reflections, shadows, and texture. Using scrims, diffusion materials, soft lighting systems, and carefully positioned light sources, I can control how the product is revealed to the viewer.

For highly reflective products, larger diffusion panels help eliminate unwanted hotspots and create clean, elegant reflections. For industrial products and machinery, directional lighting can emphasize engineering, functionality, and durability. For premium consumer products, carefully crafted lighting can communicate quality, sophistication, and value.

Product Photography For E-Commerce And Advertising

Different uses require different solutions.

Amazon product photography often requires clean white backgrounds, accurate color reproduction, consistent lighting, and product-focused compositions that comply with marketplace standards.

Advertising photography and marketing photography often require a more creative approach. Products may be photographed on location, integrated into lifestyle environments, or combined with carefully selected props that help tell a story and create an emotional connection with potential customers.

Whether photographing consumer products, industrial equipment, medical devices, manufacturing products, technology products, hospitality products, food products, or luxury goods, the objective remains the same: create images that support marketing goals and encourage customer engagement.

Creating Images That Sell

Successful product photography is about more than documenting an object. It is about communicating value.

The right combination of perspective, lighting, environment, styling, and production planning helps create images that demonstrate utility, reinforce brand identity, and support purchasing decisions.

At Bassett Studios Commercial Photography, every product photography assignment is guided by the same principle that drives all of my commercial work: understand the message, create consensus, develop a plan, and execute professionally.

The result is product photography that helps businesses market more effectively, strengthen their brands, and connect with their customers through powerful visual communication.
